Foster Carers Supporting Foster Carers: Our Buddy Programme in Action

At Three Circles, we know how important it is to feel supported — not just by professionals, but by people who truly understand the day-to-day realities of fostering. That’s why we’re proud to share that our Foster Carer Buddy Support Programme is now up and running, and already making a difference.

What is the Buddy Programme?

The first year of fostering can be a whirlwind — exciting, emotional, and often filled with questions. While all our carers have access to 24/7 support and regular support groups, we know that sometimes, the most helpful guidance comes from someone who’s been there themselves.

That’s where our Buddy Programme comes in.

We match new foster carers with more experienced carers — people who can offer informal, one-to-one support, a listening ear, and practical tips that can make those early months just a little easier. Whether it’s a quick check-in over the phone, a catch-up at a local café, or attending a training session or activity day together, Buddies provide real-life reassurance and encouragement.

How it works

All Buddies at Three Circles have been fostering for at least 12 months and have completed induction training. They’re matched with new carers based on shared experience, lifestyle, or interests. For example, solo carers may be paired with other solo carers, and those with specialist experience (like parent-and-child or UASC placements) may be matched accordingly.

Support is flexible and designed to work around each carer’s availability. Buddies are supported by our dedicated Buddy Coordinator, Katie, who helps with matching, chairs initial Support Agreement Meetings, and offers weekly drop-in slots for questions or reflection.

Why it matters

We’ve already seen how powerful these connections can be. New carers tell us they feel more confident, better prepared, and more reassured knowing there’s someone they can contact with even the smallest question. Buddies, meanwhile, often say the role helps them reflect on their own growth and gives them renewed purpose in their fostering journey.

Some of the key benefits include:

  • Stronger peer networks – no one feels alone or unsure

  • Shared experience – practical tips and emotional support that only another carer can give

  • Personal development – being a Buddy contributes to ongoing learning and can be built into your PPDP

  • Better outcomes for children – confident carers mean more stability and support for the young people we care for

Could you be a Buddy?

If you're a foster carer with over 12 months’ experience and would like to offer a helping hand to someone just starting out, we’d love to hear from you. Let your Supervising Social Worker know!

Not a Foster Carer Yet?

While our Buddy Programme is open only to approved foster carers, we know that people reading this may be curious about fostering for the first time. If you’re someone who wants to make a difference in a child’s life — and be part of a community that supports one another — we’d love to talk to you.
