Fostering vs Adoption

Fostering differs from adoption in that the local authority remains responsible for the child as their 'corporate parent.' It is often crucial for the carer to maintain connections with the child's family through regular family time sessions.

Read more about the differences in this blog post.

Foster care

Fostering involves providing care for children who are unable to remain with their families. This can range from a few weekends to several years.

Children enter foster care for various reasons. The goal of foster care is to ensure the well-being and safety of children while addressing the issues that led to them being in care. It is considered a temporary solution, intended to provide stability and support for children during a difficult period in their lives.

Foster carers

Foster carers play a vital role in providing care and support to children and young people. They are responsible for everyday tasks such as attending school and healthcare appointments, as well as supporting their participation in extracurricular activities.

Being a foster carer requires flexibility and the ability to handle challenges, even when feeling unprepared. Foster carers also have excellent teamwork skills, working closely with social workers, educators, friends, and healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcome for the child.
