Celebrating Black History Month: Honouring Identity Through Hair and Skin Care

At Three Circles, Black History Month is a time to reflect, celebrate, and take meaningful action that uplifts the children and young people we care for. One of the ways we do this is through our Black Hair and Skin Care Packs — specially created to ensure that every Black child in foster care feels seen, valued, and celebrated.

These packs are not just collections of products. They are the result of co-production with care-experienced people at Three Circle, who shared their own insights and experiences to help us understand what makes a real difference. Their voices shaped everything that goes into these packs, from the conditioners and styling jellies, to the satin bonnets, wide-tooth combs, moisturising lotions, and protective oils.

For Black children, hair and skin care are more than routines. They are deeply connected to identity, pride, and cultural heritage. Having the right products means:

  • Hair is cared for in a way that is person-centred.

  • Skin is properly moisturised and protected.

  • Children feel proud of who they are, and confident in how they look.

To learn more about the importance of Black care experiences, we recommend visiting The Black Care Experience. Their newsletters share powerful stories, lived experiences, and resources that shine a light on why this work matters so much.

By sending these packs directly to children entering foster care with us, we ensure that they have the tools they need from day one. And just as importantly, carers receive the support to understand why these items matter, helping them to nurture both self-esteem and cultural identity.

This Black History Month, we’re especially proud to highlight the role that our care-experienced community played in shaping this project. Their lived experience has helped us provide something practical, meaningful, and empowering.

Through these packs, and through ongoing support and training for foster carers, we’re committed to making sure that Black children in our care grow up not only safe, but proud of who they are.
