“The best part of the day was the people” Young person, October 2025

A Day of Adventure: Hike, Orienteering, and Scavenger Hunt

The day began with an exciting hike along the Gritstone Trail, designed to teach the basics of orienteering. Along the route, our young people participated in a scavenger hunt, searching for hidden frogs and other items to keep the activities engaging and interactive. The hike included a mid-way stop at a picnic area, providing a chance to rest, enjoy lunch, and take part in a practical educational discussion.

During the break, the group explored the “What3Words” app, learning how to pinpoint precise locations quickly and easily – a valuable tool, especially in emergency situations. The app demonstration encouraged participants to think critically about technology and safety outdoors.

Emergency First Aid Training

An essential part of the day was the introduction to emergency first aid, conducted at the first checkpoint shortly after the hike began. Participants learned the DR ABC procedure – covering danger, response, airway, breathing, and circulation – through demonstrations and hands-on practice. Each young person had the opportunity to perform primary checks and practise placing a person in the recovery position. The session was highly successful, with all participants actively engaged and confident in their new skills.

Engaging with New Technology

At the conclusion of the hike, our young people were introduced to a new app in development specifically for teenagers in foster care. The app allows young people to access resources, share feedback, and engage with tools designed to support their wellbeing. Participants were encouraged to explore the app, test its features, and suggest improvements, giving them a voice in shaping technology for foster care support.

Wrapping Up the Day

The adventure concluded with a trip to a local café for hot chocolate, giving everyone a chance to relax and reflect on the day’s activities. Afterward, carers arrived to collect the young people, who left with new skills, memorable experiences, and a stronger sense of community.

Why Experiences Like This Matter

Outdoor activities like this provide young people in foster care with more than just fun – they teach practical life skills, teamwork, and resilience, while creating opportunities for learning in real-world settings.
